Chapter 23: Conspiracy Theory

Kelly

“Who are we going to track down first?” Nicole asked, her feet dancing on the dashboard of the MRAP. “Scott, Prince, or Ladycat?”

We had attracted several dirty looks driving the rig down the mountain in the wet morning, shaking the ground beneath us. The horses at the stable were especially anxious when we stopped to help Lynn open for the day. Calming them took extra time and attention, putting us behind my already loose schedule.

“None of the above. We need to visit Dale. I want to make sure Hackett’s people are following the terms of this truce. I don’t trust them to keep her word without including some shenanigans.”

“I thought you liked shenanigans.”

“I only like my shenanigans.”

“What about my shenanigans?”

“Only when I pre-approve them.”

Nicole giggled.

The showers from yesterday relented and settled into our typical aggravating mist, where it felt like wearing the weather. The rig’s wipers insisted on clearing the windows too often or too seldom, no matter how I played with the switch.

Rolling through Fortuna at mid-morning, we drew stares on every street. Much of the Bubble had heard about the rig; however, most had never seen it. We generally restricted its use to our excursions. I realized we were using the MRAP much more than normal, and I remembered to check the fuel level. Half a tank should be more than enough to see it home.

“I knew it,” I said as we reached the airport.

A group of people, some in police uniforms, stood at the end of the road into the airport watching the hangar Dale had converted into his shop. They had positioned themselves across some empty fields, about two hundred yards away. The noise of the MRAP drew their attention to us. They made no effort to stop me. I stopped just past them.

“What are we doing?” Nicole asked.

“You’re staying here while I find out why they’re still here.”

“Don’t wanna.” She opened her door and hopped to the ground.

She waited for me by the back of the rig, arms folded and foot tapping dramatically. I continued past her and stopped a few yards from the nearest cop. Most of the people carried weapons, but they kept them in check, for now.

“I just got back yesterday,” I said, “but I heard there was a truce called. Is there a reason you’re still here?”

“Who are you?” one of the cops asked, his face skewed in distaste.

That surprised me; I thought anyone working for Hackett would at least know me by reputation.

“The hair,” Nicole said.

“I’m Kelly Ansen. You may have heard of me. I dyed my hair to go undercover.”

“Undercover? What are you talking about?”

“Never mind. Answer the question.”

“Don’t get her angry, dude,” Nicole warned.

“Oh, yeah,” one of the civilians added, “it is her.”

“Yes, it is me. Don’t worry, my hair will be back to normal in a day or two.”

“Mine too, if you were wondering,” Nicole added.

“You’re here to harass Dale, aren’t you?” I demanded.

“Look, Miss Ansen,” the first cop said, “I know you think you’re important and all, but this is none of your business.
